Project Description: The Northern Arizona Science and Health Building was a ground up new construction structure which included classrooms, lecture halls and specialty laboratories. KEAR performed as a subcontractor for M.A Mortenson Construction. This project had many inherent restrictions mainly due to the lack of room at the site. The work KEAR performed included general over-excavation and basement excavation which was all completed as other trades started the building. KEAR was able to coordinate our efforts to balance the need of production but also accommodate these subs as well as the overall project. Also included with KEAR scope of work were utilities such as domestic and reclaimed water, sewer as well as chilled water systems. KEAR dug and installed a 10’X10 precast tunnel system which included 3 vaults with sump discharge systems. This projects storm drain system was a series of underground detention tanks. KEAR installed the (2) 70’ X12’ diameter tanks and completed he discharge system with a series of pumps and controls. KEAR finished up the project by completing the site paving as well as improvements to the adjacent pedway.

Project Description: This project consisted of improving an existing dirt road while adding a new waterline and many drainage improvements. Too establish the new roadway grades over 12,000 CY of material was moved. KEAR installed over 2000 ft of 12” water main, 700 ft of 8” sanitary sewer, manholes, and 1300 LF of larger diameter ductile iron Storm drain. KEAR installed, as part of the overall storm drain system (2) underground LID storage chambers to collect and filter the storm run off. 2 cast in place retaining walls were also constructed to accommodate the new road alignment with an existing bridge abutment as well as the track beds for BNSF railway. Surface improvements included 4300 LF of new curb, 5000SF of new sidewalk as well as over 9600 SY of new Asphalt Pavement. Several existing utility lines had to be relocated, KEAR coordinated relocations with each Utility Franchises. KEAR completed the project on time and under budget.

Project Name: RSAT Improvement Project- Buckeye Municipal Airport

Project Description: This project included Airfield Grading Improvements to the Buckeye Municipal Airport in Buckeye, Arizona. Included in the scope of work was the installation of several sloped inlet and outlet headwalls with grates on existing culverts. These culverts are used to convey stormwater beneath the connector taxiways. Also included was grading of the interior safety areas throughout the airport. KEAR coordinated the project with airport users and the FAA and completed the project ahead of schedule in February of 2015.

Project Name: Pan Dam Decommissioning - Seligman, AZ

Project Description: This project consisted of decommissioning the Pan Dam which was originally built in the 1800’s. The first part of the decommissioning was to remove and place the sediment that had filled in the dam over the years. KEAR moved a total of 20,000 CY of sediment and placed it back on the existing slopes. The next phase was removed the center portion of the existing dam creating an avenue for water to pass through the dam. The final part of the decommissioning involved permanent sediment and stormwater measures which included: multiple check dams, 70 CY of concrete slabs, 175 CY of grouted rip rap, 80 SY of shotcrete, 500 CY of gabion mattresses, 5300 SY of geo-textile fabric and 8 acres of site revegetation. The remoteness of this project, site access and some large weather events during construction were some of the obstacles KEAR faced, but overcame to meet our schedule. KEAR’s scheduling and planning was a key factor in dealing and managing these challenges.

Project Name: The Grove at Flagstaff - Flagstaff, AZ

Project Description: KEAR was contracted for all the site work including over Ex building pads and grade for new parking lots. For a total of 8000 CY of dirt. Install all the water and sewer mainline and services which included 1100’ LF of water and 500’LF of Sewer, tying into existing utilities in existing paved streets while keeping access to traffic. KEAR also installed 7,000 LF of Curb & Gutter, 27,050 SF of sidewalk and 15,722 SF of Asphalt. Challenges included starting and working through winter and coordinating site access with multiple other subs. The owner had deadlines for occupancy for college students prior to start of the next semester of school. KEAR worked overtime man hours to accommodate this schedule with several delays due to other subs. But overall the contractor was happy for our effort in meeting this schedule. Due to the fact that KEAR was a local contractor, the general relied on us heavily to do more scope that was originally contracted.

One of the challenges to this project is that the site was divided into 3 Phases of construction. Once one phase of dirt work was completed other subs were allowed to start their scope which involved a lot of coordination and congestion in small work areas. Construction also involved working through two winter seasons with weather impacts. Another issue was KEAR having to re-work our scope due to damage from other subs. Conflicts with existing utilities not identified correctly on the construction plans.
Project Name: Franklin & Mohawk Street Improvements - Flagstaff, AZ

Project Description: This project was completed by KEAR for the City of Flagstaff under the 2010 bond project from 8/15/11 to 1/31/12. The project consisted of the installation of over 2,200 LF of 12” C-900 waterline, 1,050 LF of 8” DIP waterline, 350 LF of 8” DIP sewer, 20 new water meter/service connections, 6 fire hydrants, and 11 sewer service connections. Incidental to the utility construction was the removal and replacement of over 7315 square yards of asphalt, installation of 2,645 LF of curb and gutter, and the removal and replacement of 7,190 SF of new sidewalk including all required ADA compliant ramps and driveways. This Project was allowed a winter shutdown, due to paving occurring in the winter, and KEAR was still able to complete the Project 1 month ahead of schedule, and within the COF budget.

Project Description: This project was completed by KEAR for the City of Flagstaff from 4/4/11 to 8/22/11. This project included the removal and replacement of over 780 LF of 8” sewer along with 21 sewer service connections & cleanouts. Water services to five existing residences were also removed and replaced. KEAR removed 6 manholes and installed 2 new manholes. Storm drain construction included over 1,200 LF of 30” to 42” drainage pipe, associated headwalls and catch basins. Incidental to the utility construction was the removal and replacement of over 1,400 SY of asphalt, 230 LF of curb and gutter, 1,255 SF of new sidewalk including all required ADA compliant ramps and driveways. This Project did not require a winter shutdown, and the Project completed on time, and within the COF budget.

Project Description: KEAR provided turn-key grading, paving and underground utility installation services for the construction of a new U-Haul storage facility in Gilbert, Arizona. The project is a design build, and KEAR's management team brought Burns & McDonnell on board to complete the engineering services for the project. KEAR's previous project experience with Burns & McDonnell proved valuable to providing the City of Chandler with a complete design and construction package. The project involves the installation of 8" and 12" waterlines, including the crossing of Rural Road and various tie-in locations including an existing well site and reservoir.
